Chicago's Walter Payton ran 28 times for 148 yards and two touchdowns to break a six-game 49ers' winning streak over the Bears extending back to 1969. Payton struck from 20 yards out with 4:05 gone in the first quarter and again midway through the second period from the 7. Both defenses added to the scoring with second quarter safeties, the 49ers when Tommy Hart tackled Payton in the end zone and the Bears when Mike Adamle blocked a Tom Wittum punt through the end zone.
