All NFL game summaries for 09/18/1977:

Touchdown runs by Haskel Stanback and Scott Hunter helped the Falcons wipe out an early 6-0 Rams lead and break a six-game Los Angeles win streak in the series. Leeman Bennett earned a victory in his head coaching debut with Atlanta. Joe Namath, starting his first regular season game with the Rams, connected with Harold Jackson on a 27-yard scoring pass, but Rick Byas broke through to block the point-after try. Taking advantage of a 10-yard punt, the Falcons drove 37 yards in the second period for their first score and added a 33-yard Nick Mike-Mayer field goal for a 10-6 halftime lead. Hunter, 10 of 17 for 121 yards and no interceptions, led a 74-yard third- quarter scoring drive that was capped by his one-yard plunge. The Falcons' defense held the Rams in check with three sacks of Namath and three fumble recoveries.

Walter Payton rolled up 160 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns and Steve Schubert ripped off a 70-yard punt return touchdown as the Bears opened their 1977 season with a win over NFC Central rival Detroit. After the Lions marched 80 yards following the opening kickoff to take an early 7-0 lead, Payton streaked 73 yards through the Detroit defense, setting up Johnny Musso's two-yard run to tie the game. Schubert's score put the Bears ahead to stay and Payton's two short TD bursts gave Chicago a 27-10 halftime lead. Dexter Bussey led the Lions' scoring with two touchdowns while Detroit quarterback Greg Landry moved Detroit through the air with a 17 of 25, 239-yard passing day.

Jess Phillips' 11-yard third quarter touchdown run capped a 21-point comeback from a 14-0 deficit to give the Patriots their first victory over the Chiefs since 1964. Following touchdown runs by Kansas City's MacArthur Lane and Tony Reed, Darryl Stingley countered with a 34-yard TD scamper and then tied the game on a 21-yard scoring toss from Steve Grogan. Sam Cunningham led all rushers with 105 yards on 23 carries, his ninth career 100-yard game. Both defenses performed well: New England had six sacks and two fumble recoveries while Kansas City had two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and two sacks.

Willard Harrell's 75-yard punt return touchdown, his first in the NFL, sparked a 24-point Packers first half. Green Bay held on through a 20-point Saints' second half comeback to record their first opening day victory in four years. Archie Manning, making his first start for New Orleans since 1975, broke the Saints' career rushing record, picking up 34 yards ? for a 1,240-yard total ? in addition to passing for 225 yards on 18 of 30 attempts. Chuck Muncie led New Orleans rushers with 86 yards and two touchdowns, but the Packers' defense sacked Manning seven times for losses of 63 yards and came up with two turnovers to hold onto the victory.

Joe Danelo's 30-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game gave the Giants their second straight win over the Redskins after an 11-game drought. George Allen suffered his first opening day loss in 12 years as a head coach. After the Giants had built a 10-0 lead through three quarters, Billy Kilmer led the Redskins on touchdown drives of 58 and 88 yards. Mark Moseley's 51-yard field goal with 3:36 left gave Washington a 17-10 lead. Following the kickoff, Jerry Golsteyn marched the Giants 74 yards in four plays for the tying score. Ron Jaworski made his Philadelphia debut with a pair of touchdown passes and the Eagles' defense held the Buccaneers to 118 net yards as Philadelphia won its first opening day game since 1967. Jaworski combined with Tom Sullivan midway through the second period for the Eagles' first score. Late in the third quarter, Jaworski engineered a 14-play, 95-yard drive that was capped by a 17-yard scoring pass to tight end Keith Krepfle. Philadelphia's defense sacked Buccaneers' quarterback Randy Hedberg four times, allowed only 26 net yards passing, and forced Tampa Bay to punt 11 times. Larry Marshall returned nine of those to tie an NFL record.
