Roger Staubach skirted around left end at 6:14 of overtime for a four-yard touchdown to give the Cowboys their 13th consecutive opening day victory. The Vikings had tied the game 10-10 on a 35-yard field goal by Fred Cox with 1:35 left in the fourth quarter. The game went into overtime after a 27-yard Efren Herrera field goal was wide to the left with three seconds left in the contest. Chuck Foreman put Minnesota up 7-0 in the first quarter with a 18-yard touchdown catch but Dallas kept Minnesota at bay until late in the fourth period by taking advantage of five Vikings turnovers and four sacks of quarterback Fran Tarkenton.
