Joe Danelo's 30-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game gave the Giants their second straight win over the Redskins after an 11-game drought. George Allen suffered his first opening day loss in 12 years as a head coach. After the Giants had built a 10-0 lead through three quarters, Billy Kilmer led the Redskins on touchdown drives of 58 and 88 yards. Mark Moseley's 51-yard field goal with 3:36 left gave Washington a 17-10 lead. Following the kickoff, Jerry Golsteyn marched the Giants 74 yards in four plays for the tying score. Harry Carson recovered a Redskins fumble on the next series to set up Danelo's winning field goal.
