New England took over sole possession of first place in the AFC Eastern Division with a victory over Miami. The Dolphins took a 21-17 lead in the third quarter when Bob Griese, making his first start after a preseason knee injury, hit Andre Tillman with a four-yard scoring pass. On their next possession, the Patriots drove 64 yards with Horace Ivory scoring on a one-yard run. After a Garo Yepremian field goal tied the game 24-24, Ivory scored on a 23-yard run with 3:10 left in the game to give New England a 31-24 margin. Patriots' defensive tackle Richard Bishop sealed the victory, tackling Griese in the Dolphins' end zone for a safety. Miami's Delvin Williams, the NFL rushing leader, gained 116 yards on 19 carries. Ivory paced the Patriots' running attack with 113 yards on 15 carries.
