Houston exploded for 14 points in the second period and Earl Campbell rushed for over 100 yards for the seventh time to pace the Oilers to their fourth straight win. Campbell (122 yards in 27 carries) became the NFL's all-time leading rookie rusher, breaking Don Woods' record of 1,162 which was set in 1974. Campbell also set a club rushing mark, finishing the day with a league-leading 1,265 yards. Ronnie Coleman's four-yard touchdown run and Dan Pastorini's 47-yard scoring pass to Rich Caster eclipsed a 10-0 Cincinnati advantage, and the Oilers' defense held the Bengals scoreless in the second half to preserve the victory.
