All NFL game summaries for 12/17/1978:
Buffalo's Terry Miller became the tenth rookie in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Miller gained 123 yards on 15 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown, and finished the season with 1,060 yards. Colt running back Joe Washington kept the game close, throwing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Mike Siani after fumbling a handoff on a sweep. Both teams finished with 5-11 records, but Buffalo finished fourth in the AFC East by virtue of its two victories over Baltimore.

The 49ers used four quarterbacks but failed to mount a threat against the rampaging Lions, who scored 78 points in their final two games. Wide receiver Freddie Solomon, formerly a quarterback at the University of Tampa, replaced injured San Francisco regulars Steve DeBerg and Scott Bull, and defensive back Bruce Threadgill had a cast removed from his right hand in time to replace Solomon. Dexter Bussey with two touchdown runs and Benny Ricardo with four field goals paced the Detroit offensive attack. The Lions' defense collected four 49ers fumbles and three interceptions. Detroit's "Silver Rush" defensive line finished the season with a club record 53 sacks. Rookie defensive end Al Baker was the individual leader with 23.

The Chargers, behind Dan Fouts' 369 yards passing and four touchdowns, defeated the Oilers to finish 9-7 for the season (8-4 under Don Coryell). John Jefferson caught six passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns and became the first rookie wide receiver since Philadelphia's Harold Jackson (1969) to surpass 1,000 yards in a season. Jefferson had 56 catches for 1,001 yards. Another rookie, Houston's Earl Campbell, captured the NFL rushing title with 1,450 yards on 302 carries. The last rookie to win the rushing crown was Cleveland's Jim Brown in 1957.
