Substitute quarterback Vince Evans threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to James Scott and Walter Payton rushed for 182 yards on 23 carries and scored twice as the Bears improved their record to 2-0. Minnesota opened the scoring in the second quarter on a two-yard run by quarterback Tommy Kramer. Chicago countered with Bob Thomas' 34-yard field goal and Evans' scoring pass to Scott to take a 10-7 halftime lead. Minnesota's Ted Brown fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half out of the end zone for a safety and Payton ran 43 yards for a touchdown following the ensuing punt to give Chicago a 19-7 lead. Payton, who ran for 141 yards in the second half, added a 26-yard fourth quarter touchdown to complete the scoring.
