Cleveland took a 9-6 lead midway through the third quarter on Don Cockroft's 37-yard field goal. Washington started its winning drive from its own 20 with 1:56 left in the game. The drive's biggest play was its first, when Theismann completed a 34-yard pass to Danny Buggs. The victory enabled Washington to stay one game behind first place Dallas in the NFL East.
