  • Chicago Mayor Richard Daley testified at the "Chicago 7" trial. Many spectators were forced to leave the courtroom due to disturbances. The judge refused attempts by defense attorney William Kunstler to have Daley declared a hostile witness. [CBS]
  • The secret inquest into the death of Mary Jo Kopechne heard testimony from friends who attended the party with her last July. Witnesses were not permitted to say anything about the inquest outside the courtroom. A station wagon arrived with two rusted doors from Senator Kennedy's car, in which Kopechne died. [CBS]
  • There has been a sharp increase in Communist attacks in South Vietnam's northern provinces, which officials say indicates that the enemy may be entering a new phase. One of the raids was 26 miles south of Danang on a U.S. Marine headquarters, and resulted in the heaviest U.S. losses in two months. [CBS]
  • Vice President Agnew visited Kabul, Afghanistan, on the sixth stop of his Asian tour. Afghanistan is a neutral nation, getting aid from both the United States and the Soviet Union. Agnew's arrival triggered a demonstration, although plans for Peace Corps workers to demonstrate were abandoned for fear of being dismissed from the organization. [CBS]
  • The Justice Department announced that the FBI is now involved in the hunt for the killers of Joseph Yablonski, who, before his death, was an official of the United Mine Workers. The family attorney for the Yablonskis called on Attorney General Mitchell today to request an investigation and the attorney stated he believes there is a connection between the deaths and last year's UMW presidential election. Yablonski's two sons have also charged that their father's death is connected with union politics.

    Miners in Pennsylvania picketed as a memorial to Yablonski, and they also charged that the murder was connected with the election. Miners said that the purpose of the strike is to get the federal government to move against the union leadership, which they say is corrupt. [CBS]

  • People in Mississippi are not complying with the court order to desegregate. School districts with a white majority are integrating with success, but districts with a Negro majority are facing problems. [CBS]
  • The Nixon administration announced a program to train high school dropouts for part time postal jobs. [CBS]
  • Fugitive Black Panther leader Eldridge Cleaver told reporters in Algiers that he plans to return to the United States. Cleaver said that his goal is "to take Senator McClellan's head" and he claimed that many Black Panthers have been murdered by the establishment and police officers. [CBS]
  • For weeks France has been negotiating an arms sale to Libya's new leftist government; Israel is mad, and America is worried. U.S. Ambassador Sargent Shriver talked with French foreign minister Schumann. The arms deal is reportedly not as big as first expected. [CBS]
  • A high level White House source raised the prospect that illegal marijuana shipped to the United States can be halted within 1-3 years, based on talks that President Nixon is scheduled to have with Turkey, France and Mexico. [CBS]
  • Passengers on a Delta airliner escaped a hijacking over Florida by overpowering the hijackers. [CBS]
  • Alan Bean, one of four men to walk on the moon, has been suspended from flying due to violations. Astronauts Kerwin and Cunningham were also grounded for similar violations. [CBS]
  • Scientists meeting in Houston reported on the first rock and soil samples from the moon. One thousand scientists are reviewing the findings enthusiastically. [CBS]
