A Project 20 documentary on the man called "the greatest painter of Western life". Russell (1880-1926) spent 11 years of his life working as a cattlehand. His brush caught and held an era at the moment it was fading into the past. Through use of an on-camera storyteller (Milburn Stone of Gunsmoke), new film shot in Montana, known as Russell country, plus historic stills and hundreds of his paintings, the time and the man are brought back.
