Just before he spoke, three armed men held up an employee credit union in the Commerce Department, one block from the White House. President Nixon also asked Congress to help fight inflation and stated that the prospects for peace are better than when he took office. [CBS]
- In Washington, Pa., charges were filed against three Cleveland men for the murder of United Mine Workers official Joseph Yablonski, his wife and daughter. The men are Claude Vealey, Aubran Martin and Paul Gilly. They are expected to be returned to Pennsylvania to stand trial. [CBS]
- Eighty-four Americans were killed last week in Vietnam along with 197 South Vietnamese troops and 1,797 North Vietnamese. [CBS]
- In Paris, the 51st session of the Vietnam peace talks ended with no signs of progress. [CBS]
- President Nixon sent more aid and relief to what once was Biafra. In Lagos, Nigerian General Yakubu Gowon lashed out at Western correspondents for what he called their exaggerated stories of rape, starvation and suffering in Biafra. - Israel carried out ground attacks against Arabs, and Israeli paratroopers moved in on an Egyptian-held island in the Gulf of Suez. Israel also made a reprisal raid against Jordan and said that it met no opposition. The U.S. State Department is concerned over the lack of progress of talks in the Middle East. [CBS]
- A 747 jumbo jet took off on a return flight from London seven hours after its scheduled starting time; 128 passengers canceled their tickets. The plane left late, and at the end of the runway an engine overheated. Six and a half hours later a standby 747 plane was made available. [CBS]
- Oleo margarine heir Michael Brody is being impersonated. A passenger on the 747 jokingly identified himself as Brody, which led to a practical joke on reporters. The hoax began in New York City and led to a taxi cab chase by reporters in London before 17-year-old Steven Kennedy of Bethesda, Maryland, identified himself. [CBS]
- Congress may be inclined to forget the white supremacy speech made by Supreme Court nominee G. Harrold Carswell 22 years ago, but Senator Edward Kennedy says that he's "distressed" and Carswell will be asked about it during confirmation hearings. [CBS]
- Police arrested three black University of Florida students for harassing white students at gunpoint. [CBS]
- Singer-songwriter Judy Collins, a defense witness in the Chicago convention violence trial, testified by singing "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" The judge ordered her to stop. [CBS]
- The official who is heading the federal government's committee on the birth control pill, Dr. Louis Hellman, announced that the government has sufficient reason to label the pill safe. [CBS]
- The President has proposed spending $10 billion within five years to purify the nation's water. Some think that's only half the amount that will be needed just to clean up California's shoreline from the recent oil spill. [CBS]
