  • At the Paris Peace Talks, Hanoi accused the United States of bombing North Vietnam. The U.S. confirmed this, stating that a missile site in North Vietnam was hit after enemy ground fire downed a jet fighter that was accompanying a reconnaissance plane. A North Vietnamese MiG also shot down a helicopter.

    Casualty report: 75 Americans were killed last week in South Vietnam, along with 342 South Vietnamese soldiers. [CBS]

  • A Cleveland grand jury indicted Claude Vealey, Paul Gilly and Aubran Martin for conspiring to kill Joseph Yablonski of the United Mine Workers. Murder charges have been filed against the three men in Pennsylvania. Gilly's wife Annette and informant James Charles Phillips were named as co-conspirators. [CBS]
  • Chicago conspiracy trial defendant Bobby Seale returned to testify as a witness for the remaining seven defendants, who are accused of conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic Party convention. [CBS]
  • Defense Secretary Melvin Laird announced that a build up of reserve forces will be necessary if the draft is replaced by a volunteer military. The all-volunteer force, which President Nixon favors, would reduce military strength. [CBS]
  • The Pentagon is concerned over small arms which are stored in National Guard and Reserve armories, and asked Congress for money for burglar alarms. [CBS]
  • President Nixon named a three-member council on the environment. These advisers will be responsible for setting up an early warning system regarding future problems and recommending ways to clean up existing problems. [CBS]
  • The Senate confirmation hearing on Supreme Court nominee G. Harrold Carswell took testimony from opponents of the judge. [CBS]
  • Apollo 8 astronaut Frank Borman is leaving the space program to help establish the American Horizon Foundation, which will deal with national problems. The organization is headed by H. Ross Perot, who previously tried unsuccessfully to buy the release of American POWs from North Vietnam. [CBS]
  • U.S. Steel announced that it is raising prices on many steel products. [CBS]
  • Consumer groups want costs to be listed per ounce on food packages to end buyer confusion; retailers oppose the plan. New York City is trying to require price labeling for six areas of products. New York commissioner of consumer affairs Bess Myerson Grant says that the new labeling is something that the buyer badly needs. The issue is currently tied up in court, but some stores are voluntarily beginning to implement the new pricing regulation. [CBS]
  • The nuclear sub "Nathanael Greene" ran aground in Charleston, S.C. [CBS]
  • Syria and Israel carried out air raids over Haifa and Damascus, causing damage with sonic booms. The Egyptian government plans to show the film "Battle of Britain" to teach people how to protect themselves from air raids. [CBS]
  • Governor and Mrs. Ronald Reagan are being criticized for no longer living in the old Governor's mansion. They moved out of the house, which is considered to be a a fire trap, and moved to a fashionable neighborhood. [CBS]
