  • Five American helicopters were downed yesterday. The total downed during the war is now 3,589. Enemy troops moved towards Phnom Penh in the closest Communist advance on the Cambodian capital yet. The Viet Cong rejected any proposal for peace talks until all Americans are withdrawn from Indochina. [CBS]
  • Supreme Court reject G. Harrold Carswell will run for the Senate from Florida. In Miami, Florida Governor Claude Kirk and Senator Edward Gurney endorsed Carswell. Carswell has resigned his judicial post and announced that he is running for the Senate in order to strengthen conservative government. Carswell will oppose William Cramer in the Republican primary; Florida is a liberal vs. conservative battleground state. [CBS]
  • The Supreme Court rejected Florida Governor Claude Kirk's bid to change Manatee County's school desegregation. The Governor wanted a ruling on forced busing. [CBS]
  • The Supreme Court ruled that welfare aid can't be cut because of the presence of a man in the house unless he contributes to the support of the residents. It also upheld an Oregon Supreme Court ruling to remove a cross from a public park and ruled that demonstrators can't be arrested for angering spectators. [CBS]
  • H. Rap Brown failed to appear at the resumption of his Ellicott City, Maryland, trial. Brown's attorney delayed contempt charges by challenging the trial's legality. [CBS]
  • Defense Secretary Melvin Laird said that the United States is taking a chance by delaying the deployment of nuclear weapons while the Soviet Union is increasing its force. The U.S. delay was intended to aid the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. [CBS]
  • The Ohio Senate race includes Republicans James Rhodes and Robert Taft and Democrat John Glenn. The first American to orbit Earth now runs for the Senate. Glenn is a hero, not just a politician. Vietnam and inflation are Glenn's major issues; he claims that his military and space career is a basis for a good political background.   • The Justice Department is suing Geritol for $1 million, charging it with a Federal Trade Commission violation. The company has been ordered to stop claiming that its product is a cure for tiredness and nervousness. [CBS]
  • Boston celebrates Patriot Day with a marathon each year. The 26-mile Boston Marathon, the oldest and longest American footrace, started 74 years ago. Eight women broke with tradition and entered the race this year. [CBS]
