The White House is preparing Americans for increased involvement in Cambodia; 40,000 Communists have invaded the country. The United States could supply more arms and send Cambodians who are currently fighting in South Vietnam home. This is the same way that U.S. involvement in Vietnam started. [CBS]
  • Communists in Cambodia have cut Phnom Penh off from major ports; foreign embassies are evacuating. The Cambodian government believes that Vietnamese in the country are a fifth column for the enemy, which is why some were killed. [CBS]
  • A New York City political protest almost became a tragedy when an assassination attempt was made on Chiang Kai-shek's son. The bullet missed; two persons were arrested. The gunman was grabbed just before he shot. [CBS]
  • Anarchists stoned Pope Paul's motorcade and fought with police in Sardinia, Italy. [CBS]
  • Israeli bombers hit Egypt, Syria and Jordan in retaliation for Arab attacks. [CBS]

  • Arsonists destroyed the work of scholars at Stanford University when their firebombs hit the Center for Advanced Studies. [CBS]
  • Yippie leader Abbie Hoffman and singer Grace Slick tried to crash Tricia Nixon's party, and were thrown out of the White House. [CBS]
  • Congress heard My Lai testimony from General Samuel Koster, who is accused of dereliction of duty. Congress is upset at the Army's lack of cooperation with the investigation. In South Vietnam, the village of My Lai has been abandoned. As a refugee village, it was crowded and was being harassed by the Viet Cong. Most Vietnamese in the area won't accept help from Americans.   • The chairman of the House Rules Committee shelved a resolution to handle William O. Douglas' impeachment investigation. Liberal Rep. Emanuel Celler will head the investigating committee, which is a setback for anti-Douglas forces. [CBS]
