Jeannie C. Riley, who popularized the song which gives this special its title, stars in a program of country-flavored music. The fictitious hamlet of Harper Valley comes to life in comedy vignettes, complete with a mini-skirted Miss Riley and a horde of "valley hypocrites". Country western singer Jerry Reed hosts. Guest stars appearing as townspeople are Tom T. Hall (who wrote the song), Hamilton Camp, Don Bowman, Clair and McMahon, the Deer Creek Do-Gooders, Louis Roberts, Mel Tillis, Melody Engle, Virginia Peters and Debbie Williams. Guest performers include Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, the Dillards, the Earl Scruggs Review and Sammy Shore.
