[NBC 7:30] The Great Barrier Reef [special]
The third in a series of scientific documentaries deals with 1,250-mile coral reef off the east coast of Australia. This reef, varying in offshore distances between 10 and 100 miles, holds an amazing array of fish life and coral growth. The reef has suddenly come under atack by millions of coral-eating starfish, threatening to destroy this natural barrier. The National Academy of Sciences shows how man is attempting to check the starfish menace. Hugh Downs reports on the scene.
