- President Nixon campaigned in Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and California. The administration wants southern Democrats and Wallacites to vote Republican. Nixon explained his "Southern strategy" by saying that there are no second-class citizens, states or regions in America. In Raleigh, N.C., Vice President Agnew said that radical-liberals in Congress are biased against the South.
CBS took a telephone poll on the effects of the administration's campaign: 1 in 5 are more likely to support a Nixon-backed candidate; 1 in 3 are less likely to vote for the President's man; 45% are unaffected. 17% are more likely to vote for a candidate supported by Spiro Agnew, 35% are less likely, 40% are unaffected.
47% think that it's proper for a President to campaign in an off-year election, 46% think it's not. 42% said that Agnew represents their views, 46% say he does not.
[CBS] - In the Illinois Senate race, Republican Senator Ralph Smith is opposed by Adlai Stevenson III. Smith is a conservative and a Nixon supporter. President Nixon and Vice President Agnew back Smith; Stevenson is expected to win. [CBS]
- The U.S. is demanding that the Soviet Union release the two American generals who they are holding. The State Department told Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin that the USSR is violating the Soviet-American consular convention. Two U.S. citizens hijacked a Soviet plane to Turkey last week; the Soviets may want to swap. [CBS]
- General Edwin Burba died in a plane crash in Virginia. [CBS]
- North Vietnam reported that Moscow opposes the U.S. peace plan for Indochina. [CBS]
- Laotian Premier Souvanna Phouma is finally willing to sit in equal negotiations with his Communist half-brother Souphanouvong. [CBS]
- The U.S. urged a 90-day extension of the Mideast cease-fire, and told the United Nations that the United Arab Republic increased their missile sites and that the USSR has sent troops to Arab nations. [CBS]
- East and West Germany will start talks on easing tensions; Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko will be present. [CBS]
- President Salvador Allende of Chile reported two assassination attempts. [CBS]
- The FDA reported finding mercury in health pills made from seal liver; it was the first time that marine life has shown mercury contamination. [CBS]
- President Nixon may use federal funds to attract teachers to poor areas. [CBS]
- Pope Paul will tour Asia and the South Pacific in the longest papal trip ever. [CBS]

The left-wing National Coalition for a Responsible Congress has printed slanderous ads against Republicans; Senate candidates who were attacked fired back.
