  • A verdict was reached in Charles Manson's murder trial. Manson and three female members of his "family" were found guilty of first degree murder. Defense attorney Paul Fitzgerald claimed that he could have won the case if it took place outside of Los Angeles, but he was forced to select a jury from the hostile Los Angeles population. The severity of the sentence is yet to be determined. [CBS]
  • Cambodia shifted several thousand troops to Phnom Penh and ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew. The Cambodian government admits that there are probably Communists in the Phnom Penh underground.

    U.S. helicopters defended against a North Vietnamese attack near Phnom Penh. The Defense Department announced that Green Berets are training Cambodian forces in South Vietnam and Thailand. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will shortly begin hearings on the U.S. role in Cambodia, and Secretary of State Rogers is expected to testify. [CBS]

  • South Vietnam released some POWs in the DMZ. Forty North Vietnamese POWs were released; three of them decided to stay in South Vietnam. POWs had to row themselves across the river because there was no North Vietnamese delegation present. A delegation from North Vietnam would be an admission of their presence in South Vietnam. [CBS]
  • Tennessee Rep. William Anderson stated that the Berrigan brothers are heroes of the peace movement, and he urged other church leaders to become Christian activists too. Vice President Agnew called Anderson's speech "claptrap." [CBS]
  • U.S. investigators are trying to determine who was responsible for wounding three Vietnamese children. Two previous similar incidents caused antagonism toward soldiers.

    There were anti-American riots in Qui Nhon after a soldier killed a Vietnamese boy. A Vietnamese schoolteacher in Bong Son was killed by U.S. gunfire from a truck; South Vietnamese locals then threatened to shoot any U.S. vehicles using the road. Incidents are increasing because of lower military discipline and morale. Vietnam has become sensitized; a small incident can trigger a large reaction. [CBS]

  • Ugandan President Milton Obote's government was overthrown after brief fighting as Obote was in the process of returning from the Commonwealth Conference in Singapore. He flew to Kenya instead. [CBS]
  • Citizens of East and West Berlin will be able to telephone each other for the first time in 18 years as of January 31. [CBS]
  • The countdown has begun for Sunday's Apollo 14 moon flight launch. Astronauts are restricted to quarters, insuring their health. [CBS]
  • President Nixon met with congressional leaders in order to generate support for his revenue sharing plan. Rep. Gerald Ford says he is confident that the Ways and Means Committee will hold hearings on revenue sharing, and the legislation will pass. Nixon met with Rep. John Byrnes and Ways and Means Committee chairman Wilbur Mills, who promised expeditious hearings on revenue sharing.

    Ohio Governor John Gilligan said that if the President Nixon's program is adopted, state and local governments will continue to fall further behind financially. Detroit Mayor Roman Gribbs noted that cities will at best expect moderate increases in funds, at worst a decrease. Labor and civil rights lobbies oppose the President's plan. [CBS]

  • The Sierra Club announced its opposition to the proposed nomination of Rogers Morton for Secretary of the Interior. [CBS]
  • The FTC proposed that detergent manufacturers be required to place phosphate warnings in ads and on their products. [CBS]
