- Secretary of State Rogers is urging Israel to withdraw to the pre-1967 war borders. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir told the Knesset that Israel won't give up the Golan Heights, Jerusalem, the Jordan River or Sharm el-Sheikh. The legislature gave Meir a vote of confidence after conservative members walked out. Egypt and Syria formed a military union with forces under one commander. The deal allows Egypt to use Syrian airfields. [CBS]
- A Soviet doctor and his family went to the U.S. embassy in Moscow to inquire about coming to the United States. Russian guards dragged the wife and children away but the doctor was rescued by U.S. embassy workers; the doctor later surrendered to Soviet police. [CBS]
