Mel Torme looks at 1949 with Sid Caesar, Dave Garroway and Los Angeles Times television columnist Cecil Smith. Caesar reprises his comedy characterizations and Garroway quotes from William Faulkner, who won the Nobel Prize for literature that year. Smith recalls the tragic story of Kathy Fiscus, the 3 ½ year old girl who fell into a well while playing, and the weekend of unflagging rescue efforts -- doomed to failure -- as the world waited for word. Other segments spotlight Hopalong Cassidy (Bill Boyd), who galloped to fame on TV, the plight of Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary, the marriage of Rita Hayworth to Aly Khan, and Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate".
