[CBS 10:00] POWs - Pawns Of War
CBS News explores the plight of American servicemen imprisoned in North Vietnam and the prospects for their release in a special two-part report which concludes June 29. Segments will look at the physical conditions of the prisoners, the efforts of their families to gain their freedom, and the allegations that the prisoners are being used by both sides as pawns in the political/military struggle over Vietnam. Described by executive producer Ernest Leiser as "the most wide-ranging study of the prisoner of war question yet undertaken", both hours will also examine the political motivations that have directed the course the U.S. and North Vietnam have taken in dealing with the POW issue. Additional segments focus on the predicament of the families of the 1,600 men captured - or missing - and on the organized campaigns to free the prisoners. Walter Cronkite is anchorman.
