CBS has obtained a film from the Viet Cong through a European source which supposedly shows the capture of American soldiers in a battle from October, 1968, near Con Thien. The film shows the Viet Cong attacking and then capturing American soldiers. The Defense Department said that some of the film is new and that CBS should show the film in hope that families and friends could identify the U.S. soldiers.The last two outposts manned by U.S. special forces have been turned over to South Vietnam. The Green Berets have a history of friction with the Army, and have fallen out of favor. Defense Secretary Laird will start an eight-day inspection tour of South Vietnam tomorrow to observe "Vietnamization" and U.S. troop withdrawals. [CBS] President Nixon will be interviewed by four news correspondents tonight then will fly to the Western White House tomorrow. [CBS] Families and friends of the victims of the coal mine blast in Hyden, Kentucky, were visited by government officials, including presidential representative William Boleyn who offered condolences on behalf of the Nixon administration. [CBS] An investigation in Chicago of the ACLU's charges that Army intelligence agents spied on civilians revealed Army records on certain public officials. Those records have been turned over to the Chicago police. [CBS] Two people hijacked a Tampa-bound plane to Havana. The U.S. marshal for the Los Angeles district said today that anti-hijacking measures are working, however there are not enough men to inspect every flight. [CBS] A Philadelphia bank cut its prime interest rate to 6.5%. [CBS] Secretary of State Rogers conferred with United Nations Secretary U Thant about the Mideast peace talks. President Sadat of Egypt confirmed that Soviet troops have manned missile sites in the Suez Canal area. [CBS] A congressional committee learned that "Food for Peace" money is being used by some countries to purchase weapons. [CBS]
