  • The South Vietnamese Supreme Court ruled that Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky is eligible to be a candidate in the presidential campaign. Ky will announce tonight whether he will run. The U.S. State Department expects Ky to run; no one contends that the U.S. is maintaining a hands-off policy regarding the South Vietnam election. U.S. Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker spoke with Ky today. Senator Mike Mansfield called the South Vietnam presidential race a farce. [CBS]

  • The Democratic National Committee charged that President Nixon's new economic policy favors big business over the working man; Senator George McGovern called for a 82% excess profits tax on big business.

  • At least nine people were killed by two hand grenades which exploded at a political rally in Manila, Philippines. [CBS]
  • Ralph Nader's task force charged that California is allowing land interests to obtain funds from subsidies while destroying land and water resources. Nader said that power without accountability, decisions with secrecy, and illegalities without sanctions recur in land manipulations throughout America; he called on Congress to investigate U.S. land policies.

    Nader's task force blames big corporations for turning California into an environmental disaster area; its report demands that the Southern Pacific Railroad relinquish its land holdings to the public because of land grant violations. The report also charges that California Governor Ronald Reagan asked President Nixon not to enforce federal water quality rules in California.
