  • An Amoco Oil Company offshore oil well is on fire off the coast of Louisiana; safety valves on the well didn't work. [CBS]
  • Undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau told a Senate committee that ocean life may die in 30-50 years unless water pollution is stopped; he wants industrial nations to get together to stop undersea dumping. [CBS]
  • In Pittsburgh, 100,000 fans greeted the Pirates as they returned home from winning the World Series. Fires were set, cars overturned and some other violence ensued. 98 people were arrested and 100 were injured.
