[NBC 9:00] America: A Firebell In The Night [special] The Civil War and the issue that triggered it -- slavery -- are Alistair Cooke's major topics in the sixth segment of his series on American history. Cooke traces the efforts to stop the spread of slavery, the compromise proposed by Henry Clay, the Dred Scott decision, and the rather unusual rejection of slavery by Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate forces. Cooke also patrols the battlefield at Shiloh and shows rare portraits of Abraham Lincoln and soldiers slain at the Battle of Gettysburg.
