William Shakespeare's ageless comedy comes to TV in an updated, Americanized version -- the 16th century Italian characters transported to early 20th century middle America in the first of a series of specials produced by Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival. In a 1910 small town setting, Beatrice and Benedick are two sarcastic people, brittle and sharp-witted, who are surrounded by Keystone Kops, Model T's, ragtime music, smoke-flashing cameras and the suffragette movement.
