[NBC 9:00] The American Experience: Strange And Terrible Times [special] The second in a series of 10 dramatic essays keyed to the American Revolution Bicentennial dwells on the crises that threatened the existence of the United States. The program re-creates three precarious periods in U.S. history - the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the Great Depression - relating these struggles of the past to the violence and upheaval of the present. Ralph Bellamy acts as storyteller of an incident involving Gen. George Washington (struggle to consummate the Declaration of Independence). Host-narrator Chet Huntley also tells about incidents involving Abraham Lincoln (the issue of slavery) and the early 30s Depression (the Dust Bowl, labor unrest and breadlines).
