News stories from Tuesday August 14, 1973

Summaries of the stories the major media outlets considered to be of particular importance on this date:

  • U.S. bombing support for the Cambodian government ends at midnight tonight. American involvement in Cambodia can be traced from the secret bombings to Prince Sihanouk's exile, Lon Nol's takeover, the official U.S. military entry into Cambodia, the failure of Henry Kissinger's peace negotiations, and finally Congress' cutoff of funding for U.S. bombing. [CBS]
  • President Nixon has scheduled a speech on Watergate for Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EDT. The speech will be broadcast live. [CBS]
  • Vice President Spiro Agnew offered his full cooperation to federal investigators who are probing possible kickbacks and bribery while Agnew was governor of Maryland. Agnew opened all of his personal files for examination. White House spokesman Gerald Warren denied rumors that a search for vice presidential successors is underway in anticipation of Agnew being indicted. [CBS]
  • Some contributors to President Nixon's re-election campaign have asked for a refund. The re-election committee has returned large illegal corporate contributions and some large individual contributions, such as Robert Vesco's. But small contributors' requests for refunds receive no money, just a form letter response. [CBS]
  • The Deprogramming of Kathy Crampton, Part II: The abduction of Kathy Crampton from a religious commune by deprogrammer Ted Patrick and Kathy's parents continues. Henrietta Crampton believes Kathy's mind must be cleared so she can think. Patrick began the deprogramming at a motel at Chula Vista, California. Her parents, Patrick, and other deprogrammers talked with Kathy. Patrick admitted that everyone he tries to deprogram hates him because religious cultists are forced to defend their beliefs, and they can't. Kathy escaped, but was again taken against her will. ACLU lawyer Mike Pancer insists that civil rights are violated by Ted Patrick's deprogramming practice. Pancer said that police are biased against Jesus freaks, so Patrick and cultists' parents are able to take them away from a commune without police interference.

The final deprogramming report on Kathy Crampton airs tomorrow. [CBS]

  • Jeb Magruder, former deputy director of the Nixon re-election campaign committee, will plead guilty to one charge of obstructing justice in the Watergate case. Magruder will appear before Judge John Sirica and the second Watergate grand jury. [CBS]
  • A Houston grand jury indicted Elmer Wayne Henley, 17, and David Brooks, 18, in the Texas mass murder case. [CBS]
  • Pamela Kelly was seriously injured in the auto accident involving David and Joseph Kennedy III, the sons of the late Robert Kennedy. Miss Kelly is partially paralyzed as a result. [CBS]
  • A rescue ship has been readied for launch, but Skylab astronauts probably won't need it. Unless further complications develop, the astronauts will use their own command ship for the trip home. A film from Skylab shows astronaut Alan Bean maneuvering in a Buck Rogers-style jetpack. [CBS]
  • The Cost of Living Council announced that some firms have applied for price increases under Phase IV. Many steel and auto companies are seeking increases. [CBS]
  • Wheat futures hit a new high on the Minneapolis grain exchange. [CBS]
