Ken Howard and Blythe Danner, both Broadway actors, make their series debuts as the husband-wife attorneys. He is an assistant DA; she is a junior partner in a legal firm. In the first episode the Bonners get involved in proving a point, that it's all right for a man to pick up a girl, but not the other way around.

The ninth season starts. The emphasis will be more on comedy with two or three standup comedians as guests. One segment of each show will be a "roasting" of a famous personality. Gov. Ronald Reagan is the initial "roastee".
