  • Fighting was heavy today on the Golan Heights. Syria's and Israel's versions of the fighting differ. Syrian television showed attacks on Israeli planes, along with some Israeli pilots who were captured.

    In the Sinai Peninsula, Israeli troops reacted to the new war with cocky enthusiasm. Cairo charged that Israel shelled Port Said along the Suez Canal, killing some civilians. Egyptians also claim to have captured the Israeli-held town of Qantara. Both sides insist they're winning.

    In Tel Aviv, Israeli chief of staff General David Elazar held a press briefing. He declared that Israel will continue to counterattack against attacking Arab forces. Nixon met with Secretary State Henry Kissinger, and assured the press that Kissinger is very busy with diplomatic proposals to settle the war.   • The Senate approved a resolution deploring the fighting in the Mideast and insisting that the Arabs pull back to the 1967 cease-fire line.   • Lawyers for reporters who were served with subpoenas by Vice President Spiro Agnew's lawyers hope to quash those subpoenas. The Justice Department filed a brief to Agnew's lawyers, regarding news leaks and subpoenas. [CBS]
  • The Senate Watergate committee plans to end the "dirty tricks" phase of its hearings quickly and move on to the final phase regarding campaign financing. [CBS]
  • Tyrone Marshall pleaded guilty to shooting Senator John Stennis last January in a robbery attempt. [CBS]
  • Teenagers Wayne Henley and David Brooks pleaded innocent to charges stemming from the Houston, Texas, mass murders. [CBS]
  • The American League playoff game between Oakland and Baltimore was rained out today, but the National League playoff between the Mets and Reds was full of action when Pete Rose and Bud Harrelson began fighting, which resulted in a brawl involving both teams and some spectators. When the ballgame finally resumed, the Mets won over the Reds. [CBS]
