Series about a family living in the Blue Ridge Mountain area of Virginia during the Depression years; their hopes, desires and relationships and the people who make up their community. The family was introduced in the TV movie pilot, "The Homecoming" which was based on the 1963 movie, "Spencer's Mountain". In the first episode, a woman abandons her young daughter on the Waltons' doorstep without her husband's knowledge, and the head of the house feels he must turn the child over to the county home.
