The slavery issue is splitting the nation in 1858 as Sen. Stephen Douglas, aided by his wife and his conscience, launches a series of debates with a political unknown, Abraham Lincoln. Mrs. Douglas, who sits quietly on the platform during the debates, questions her husband's actions in their private talks. Gnawed by mounting doubts, Mrs. Douglas seeks and obtains a private audience with Lincoln.
