Oregon Coach Enright Fired

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon fired Dick Enright as head football coach Friday and replaced him with assistant Don Read, who has coached the quarterbacks and receivers for the Webfoots the past two years. "I was not happy with the direction being given to the football program," said athletic director Norv Ritchey, who also said the remaining two years of Enright's contract would be honored. Enright, 39, a former lineman at USC, had a 4-7 record in his first season at Oregon in 1972 and slipped to 2-9 last year, beating only Washington and California. Read, 40, was athletic director and football coach at Portland State four seasons before coming to Oregon two years ago.

Other college coaching changes:

Virginia Tech -- Reported that Charlie Coffey, who had four years left an his contract, resigned. The Gobblers had a 12-20-1 record during Coffey's three years as head coach including a 2-9 mark in 1973.

Wichita State -- Named Jim Wright, 38, an assistant at Tennessee, as head coach replacing Bob Seaman, who was fired.

Utah -- Reported that Bill Meek, who had a 33-31 record in his six years as head coach, resigned "for personal reasons." Meek's three-year contract had just expired but university president David Gardner said the school "had been favorably considering the renewal of the pact."
