Ali-Frazier 'Likely' For June, Futch Says

While Muhammad Ali continues to bask in the glory of his regained heavyweight throne, negotiations continue for a rubber match with ex-champ Joe Frazier. Ali, who was at ringside for Joe Bugner's second-round KO win over substitute Alberto Lovell Tuesday night in London, hasn't made any firm announcements concerning his next opponent, site or date. However, Frazier's manager-trainer, Eddie Futch, said Thursday, "We're trying to put the fight together. We've had exploratory talks with various groups. Some offers are legitimate; some are suspect." Futch said three sites are being strongly considered -- New York, Washington, D.C., and Iran.

"June could be a likely date, although Ali has expressed a willingness to fight as early as March," he added. "Ali, being the champion, will determine the site." Frazier, who has been handled by Futch for more than a year, has been under contract to Cloverlay, Inc., a group in Philadelphia, for nine years. The contract expires in two weeks. "It was a very productive relationship and everyone has been happy," Futch continued, "but Joe feels he wants to strike out in another direction now. A smaller group is being formed (to represent Frazier), including some former members of Cloverlay. I'll have an interest in the new group." Futch is attempting to line up several exhibitions for Frazier early next year -- in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico City.
