Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 6, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
A homer by Harmon Killebrew after Rod Carew doubled started the Twins' scoring in the first inning en route to a 6-4 victory over the White Sox. The Twins picked up an unearned run in the second, Frank Quilici singled to knock in two tallies in the sixth and Tony Oliva wrapped up the scoring with a round-tripper in the ninth. Bill Melton had four hits for the White Sox and batted in three of their runs.

Orioles 13, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Don Buford batted in five runs with two homers and a sacrifice fly as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 13-1, behind the two-hit pitching of Tom Phoebus. Boog Powell and Davey Johnson also homered for the Orioles. Vada Pinson accounted for the Indians' hits with a single in the fourth inning and a homer in the ninth.

Royals 3, A's 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Bill Butler and Dave Morehead combined to pitch the Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Athletics. Butler gave up three hits before a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand forced him to yield the mound to Morehead with a man on base and none out in the seventh inning. Morehead gave up two hits the rest of the way. The A's scored an unearned run in the ninth to break the club record streak of 21 shutout innings by the Royals' staff. The Royals counted twice in the first inning on a single by Pat Kelly, double by Ed Kirkpatrick and a wild pitch. Jim Campanis hit his first A.L. homer to account for the other run in the fifth.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 3 at New York (day game):
The Yankees fell behind in the sixth inning, 3-1, but got an immediate lift from Bobby Murcer, who homered with two men on base to beat the Red Sox, 4-3. Roy White also homered for the Yankees' initial run in the first. The Red Sox, after being held hitless by Fritz Peterson over five frames, broke ahead in the sixth with their three runs on walk, three singles and an infield out. In the Yankees' half, Thurman Munson singled, White walked and Murcer turned the tide with his circuit clout.

Reds 3, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Wayne Simpson made his major league debut with a two-hitter and pitched the Reds to a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. Johnny Bench decided Simpson's duel with Don Sutton by smashing a homer in the seventh inning. The Reds added other runs in the ninth on singles by Tony Perez and Bench and a double by Dave Concepcion.

Cardinals 7, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Joe Torre smashed a homer and two singles, driving in three runs, to lead the Cardinals' attack in a 7-3 victory over the Expos. Joe Hague also homered and Jose Cardenal batted in two runs with a pair of singles.

Phillies 5, Cubs 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Greeting the arrival of Phil Regan in relief, Deron Johnson walloped a three-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Phillies a 5-3 victory over the Cubs. The Phillies, who were trailing, 3-1, opened the seventh with a run off Ken Holtzman on a single by Rick Joseph, a double by Larry Bowa and an infield out by Denny Doyle. After Larry Hisle walked, Regan took over to face Johnson.

Pirates 2, Mets 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Two errors on the same play in the first inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Mets in a duel between Dock Ellis and Jerry Koosman. Matty Alou and Bill Mazeroski drew walks to set the Pirates' scoring in motion. Roberto Clemente beat out a tap down the third base line and when Joe Foy threw wildly past first base, Alou scored. Mazeroski also raced for home and was safe when Jerry Grote dropped the throw from right fielder Ron Swoboda. Ellis, who pitched the route, gave up five walks, three of them in the fourth when the Mets counted on a sacrifice fly by Grote.

Braves 6, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Hank Aaron hit the 555th homer of his major league career and Jim Nash made a winning debut in the N. L. by pitching the Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Padres. Aaron clubbed his homer with a man on base in the first inning and also doubled and scored in the fourth when the Braves added three runs.

Giants 7, Astros 4 at San Francisco (day game):
A five-run outburst in the eighth inning brought the Giants a 7-4 victory over the Astros. Ron Hunt hit a pinch-single and Willie Mays walked to open the stanza. When Bobby Bonds bunted, John Mayberry threw both late and wild in an attempted forceout at third base, Hunt scoring. Al Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to send the Giants ahead. 4-3. Two walks and singles by Steve Whitaker and Dick Dietz helped produce three more runs before the inning ended. Dietz hit a homer with a man on base earlier in the game, while Doug Rader accounted for the Astros' last tally with a round-tripper in the ninth.
