Tigers 7, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles' string of five straight victories since the start of the season came to an end with a 7-2 loss to the Tigers. Joe Niekro helped assure the triumph by hitting a triple with two men on base in the fourth inning when the Tigers scored five runs. Niekro yielded only six hits but was lifted in the ninth after Brooks Robinson homered for the Orioles and Tom Timmerman came in to register the final out.

[DH] Brewers 5, White Sox 2 (day game) / Brewers 16, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
After winning the first game, 5-2, the Brewers went on a hitting rampage and added a 16-2 victory to complete the sweep of a doubleheader with the White Sox. Danny Walton clinched the Brewers' decision in the opener by hitting a homer with a man on base in the sixth inning. George Lauzerique not only pitched the Brewers to victory in the second game, but joined in the attack with a single and a homer, driving in four runs. Every player in the lineup, except for Tommy Harper, collected one or more of the Brewers' 16 hits. Steve Hovley accounted for five RBIs with a double and two singles.

Angels 7, Royals 5 at Kansas City (day game):
The Angels rallied for five runs on two homers in the sixth inning and defeated the Royals, 7-5, for their the fifth straight victory. With the help of a circuit clout by Jim Campanis, the Royals held a 5-2 lead going into the sixth. Jay Johnstone opened the Angels' rally with a single and Roger Repoz followed with a round-tripper. Aurelio Rodriguez and Rick Reichardt then singled and Jim Fregosi capped the Angels' comeback with the winning homer.

[DH] Indians 2, Yankees 1 (day game) / Yankees 5, Indians 4 at New York (day game):
Russ Nagelson hit his first major league homer to provide the Indians with a 2-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Yankees won the nightcap, 5-4, on a pass with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Sam McDowell, who pitched the lidlifter for the Indians, struck out 10 and raised his career total to 1,684, moving to 34th place on the all-time list. The Indians scored on a walk to Ted Uhlaender and a double by Duke Sims in the first inning and got their deciding marker when Nagelson homered in the seventh. In the nightcap, the Indians tied the score at 4-4 in the ninth with two unearned runs on a wild throw by Danny Cater with the bases loaded. In the Yankees' half, John Ellis singled and Cater and Gene Michael walked. Mike Paul then relieved Dennis Higgins and passed Ron Hansen on a 3-and-2 count to force in the winning run.

Senators 6, Red Sox 5 at Washington (night game):
A homer by Mike Epstein and two doubles by Frank Howard, who barely missed clearing the fence with both drives, helped the Senators to 6-5 victory over the Red Sox. Epstein hit his homer in the fourth inning after Howard doubled, breaking a 1-1 tie. Howard's second double accounted for two of the Senators' three runs in the fifth. Jerry Moses and Carl Yastrzemski homered for the Red Sox, who scored three runs in the ninth before their rally died.

Astros 8, Braves 3 at Houston (day game):
The Astros set a club record for homers in one game, smashing five en route to an 8-3 victory over the Braves. Jim Wynn blasted two tremendous drives, one of them reaching the fifth-deck seats of the Astrodome, 65 feet above ground at the 340-foot mark from home plate. Joe Pepitone, Tommy Davis and Doug Rader rapped other round-trippers. Larry Dierker blanked the Braves on five hits until the ninth inning, but then gave up their three runs on four hits, including a homer by Orlando Cepeda.

Dodgers 6, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
The Dodgers snapped a five-game losing streak and posted their first victory of the season by defeating the Padres, 6-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Bill Singer. The Dodgers scored four runs in the first inning, two on a single by Wes Parker. In the seventh, Tom Haller walked and Billy Grabarkewitz hit his first major league homer and also the first homer by any member of the Dodgers this year.

Expos 2, Cubs 0 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos gained their the first victory of season when Ron Fairly belted a two-run homer and Bill Stoneman pitched a three-hitter to defeat the Cubs, 2-0.

Pirates 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Bill Mazeroski, who drove in the Pirates' first run with a single in the eighth inning, came to bat again with a man on base in the tenth and smashed a homer to beat the Phillies, 3-1.

[DH] Reds 6, Giants 5 (day game) / Reds 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The slugging of Tony Perez in the first game and the hitting of Johnny Bench and Bobby Tolan in the second game featured the Reds' sweep of a doubleheader with the Giants, 6-5 and 5-2. Perez smashed two homers and two singles, driving in four runs. In the ninth inning, consecutive singles by Pete Rose, Tony Perez and Bench plated what proved to be the winning run. In the nightcap, Tolan batted in two runs with a homer and single, while Bench accounted for two RBIs with a triple. Wayne Granger relieved in both games for the Reds and received credit for two saves. Granger retired Ron Hunt on a fly with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of the opener. Al Gallagher, the Giants' rookie the third baseman, collected seven hits in nine times at bat in the twin bill.

Mets 6, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Although unable to go the route, Tom Seaver batted in three runs with a single and double to help himself to victory as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-4. Al Weis accounted for two RBIs with a double. Seaver was lifted after Dick Allen homered and Joe Hague and Julian Javier singled with two out in the eighth inning. After Ron Taylor relieved, Cookie Rojas beat out an infield hit to load the bases, but Carl Taylor ended the Cardinals' threat by flying out.
