Today's scores and summaries:

A's 2, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
A two-run single by Reggie Jackson in the seventh inning enabled the Athletics to defeat the Brewers, 2-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Catfish Hunter and Diego Segui before an Oakland opening-night crowd of 26,270. Hunter yielded only two hits but was losing, 1-0, on an unearned run before the A's rallied. Tito Francona batted for Hunter in the seventh and singled. After one out, Rick Monday also singled and Sal Bando, running for Francona, took third. Felipe Alou flied to Danny Walton, Monday advancing to second. On John O'Donoghue's first pitch in relief, Jackson rapped his single.

Braves 9, Giants 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Playing before an opening-night crowd of 37,181, the Braves exploded for four runs in the first inning and added five more in the fourth to defeat the Giants, 9-3. Hank Aaron homered with a man on base to feature the initial outburst and drove in another run with a single in the fourth. Rico Carty singled to add two tallies and Tony Gonzalez then capped the Braves' scoring with a two-run triple.

Padres 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Sparked by Tommy Dean, who hit a homer, the Padres scored three runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Reds, 3-1. After Dean's blow, Dave Campbell doubled, Nate Colbert walked and Cito Gaston batted in both runners with a double to provide the Padres' winning margin.

Dodgers 2, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Don Sutton yielded only two hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 2-0 victory over the Astros. Andy Kosco decided Sutton's duel with Denny Lemaster by hitting a homer in the sixth inning. Sutton batted in the other run with a single off reliever Jack Billingham in the ninth.
