Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Yankees 2 at Boston (day game):
Jim Lonborg capped the Red Sox scoring with the second homer of his major league career to mark a 6-2 victory over the Yankees. Lonborg held the Yankees to three singles in the first seven innings, but then needed help from Sparky Lyle when the Yankees scored their runs in the eighth on a single by Jerry Kenney, double by Jake Gibbs, a wild pitch and an infield out.

Twins 8, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Manager Bill Rigney made his first appearance in Anaheim with the Twins and enjoyed 8-2 victory over the Angels, who had fired him as their leader last May. The Twins scored all their runs with the aid of three homers in the sixth-inning explosion. Cesar Tovar led off with a circuit clout. Rod Carew reached second when Alex Johnson dropped his curving fly ball, and scored on a single by Tony Oliva. After Harmon Killebrew walked and Rich Reese was hit by a pitched ball, Brant Alyea smashed a grand-slam to kayo Andy Messersmith. Mel Queen, in relief, gave up a single by George Mitterwald and a homer by Leo Cardenas before the inning ended.

White Sox 7, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Jerry Janeski, who led the International League in complete games last season with 14 for Louisville, turned in the first of his brief major league career and pitched the White Sox to a 7-0 victory over the Athletics. The rookie righthander yielded only three hits. The White Sox collected 10, including the first major league homer for John Matias and other circuit clouts by Buddy Bradford and Duane Josephson.

Braves 7, Padres 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Orlando Cepeda, who hit a homer and single earlier in the game, broke a 5-5 tie with a single that batted in one run and led to another in the seventh inning, providing the Braves with a 7-5 victory over the Padres. Clete Boyer also homered for the Braves, while Nate Colbert hit two and Cito Gaston one for the Padres. Colbert's second smash knotted the count in the sixth. Cepeda's single in the seventh scored Hank Aaron from second base and Rico Carty also came home from first when Ed Spiezio let the throw from the outfield get past him for an error.

Cubs 5, Phillies 1 at Chicago (day game):
Billy Williams, who went 0-for-19 before rapping a single in the previous day's game, broke out of his slump with four hits, including the 250th homer of his major league career, to lead the Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Phillies. Bill Hands pitched the route for the Cubs and allowed only six hits.

Reds 3, Dodgers 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds scored all their runs in the third inning and then survived a rally by the Dodgers in the ninth to gain a 3-2 victory. Jim Merritt, who started for the Reds, was on the verge of a shutout until Manny Mota singled in the ninth and Andy Kosco homered with two out. When Wes Parker doubled, Clay Carroll replaced Merritt. A balk moved Parker to third, but Jim Lefebvre lined to Tommy Helms to end the game. Helms batted in one run with a double and Bobby Tolan drove in two with a single for the Reds.

Astros 7, Giants 6 at Houston (night game):
After belting the first two homers of his major league career, John Mayberry was hit by a pitch in the tenth inning and scored on singles by Johnny Edwards and Jim Beauchamp to give the Astros the victory over the Giants. Mayberry hit his the first homer in the third inning and Joe Pepitone whacked one in the fifth, but the Giants had a three-run smash by Willie McCovey and a solo swat by Dick Dietz in taking 6-3 lead. Mayberry then tied the score in the eighth, hitting his second homer of game after Pepitone and Denis Menke had singled.

Cardinals 10, Expos 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Mike Torrez yielded only one hit -- a single by Adolfo Phillips to lead off the eighth inning -- and shut out the Expos, 10-0, for his second victory with the Cardinals this season and his 11th in a row since last July 1. In addition, Torrez enjoyed a perfect night at bat with three singles in three official trips. The Cardinals' 15-hit attack also included a homer and two singles by Dick Allen.
