Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A mental lapse on the part of Davey Johnson led to the defeat of the Orioles when Danny Cater tripled with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th inning to give the Yanks a 4-1 victory. Horace Clarke led off the decisive stanza with a single and was on second with two out when the Orioles decided to walk Roy White intentionally. Pete Ward then grounded to Mark Belanger, who bobbled the ball momentarily before throwing to the second, but Johnson failed to cover the bag and all runners were safe. Cater followed with his triple on a looping fly into the left field corner.

Royals 7, Angels 5 at California (night game):
The hitting of George Spriggs and Bob Oliver paced the Royals to a 7-5 victory over the Angels. Spriggs collected four hits in five trips and scored three runs. Oliver drove in three with a triple and a sacrifice fly. Jay Johnstone, who batted in four runs for the Angels, tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth inning by hitting a homer with two men on base. The Royals broke away in the seventh when Spriggs singled, took third on a single by Ed Kirkpatrick and counted on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (day game):
Running with two out, Al Kaline scored from the first base on a double by Jim Northrup in the 11th inning to bring the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Mike Andrews singled and Reggie Smith homered for the Red Sox in the first. The Tigers' initial tally counted in the home half on a double by Mickey Stanley, sacrifice bunt by Dick McAuliffe and infield out by Kaline. The tying run followed in the eighth on a double by Don Wert and a pair of grounders. Kaline walked in the 11th before making his winning dash home.

A's 5, Twins 2 at Oakland (night game):
After giving up two runs in the first inning on a single by Cesar Tovar and homer by Tony Oliva, Catfish Hunter bore down the rest of the way and pitched the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Twins. The A's came back with three runs on two homers in the fourth. Bob Johnson led off with a round-tripper and, after Roberto Pena singled, Dave Duncan hit for the circuit. Other runs scored in the fifth on singles by Felipe Alou and Johnson, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by Dick Green and single by Pena.

Cubs 8, Expos 7 at Chicago (day game):
A pass to Ron Santo with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the Cubs an 8-7 victory over the Expos, who tossed away the game after rallying in the top half of the final frame to take a 7-6 lead. Johnny Callison homered with two men on base for the Cubs in the first inning. The Expos, after trailing going into the ninth, went ahead with three runs on a pass to Marv Staehle, homer by Rusty Staub, double by Ron Fairly and single by Bobby Wine. In the Cubs' half, Jim Hickman singled and Boots Day, running for him, scored on a double by Willie Smith. Don Kessinger walked and, after two out, Billy Williams also drew a pass to load the bases and Santo walked to force in Cleo James, who ran for Smith.

Reds 8, Giants 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds smashed five homers, including two that produced four runs in the ninth inning, to beat the Giants, 8-5. Johnny Bench and Lee May started the Reds' bombardment with consecutive homers in the fourth. After the Giants went ahead, 4-2, Angel Bravo walked in the seventh and Pete Rose tied the score with a round-tripper. Willie McCovey put the Giants in front again by smashing a homer in the ninth. In the Reds' half, Hal McRae batted for Wayne Granger and came through with a circuit clout to tie the score. Rose singled and, after a sacrifice, Bobby Tolan was handed an intentional pass. Tony Perez then came to the plate and hit the winning homer.

Astros 4, Padres 1 at Houston (night game):
Although rapped for 11 hits, Larry Dierker turned in his third straight winning performance, pitching the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Padres. The only run off the righthander scored in the second on a double by Dave Campbell and single by Jerry Morales. After the Astros picked up a run on a single by Tommy Davis and double by Denis Menke in the fourth, Jim Wynn put them ahead with a homer in the sixth. Joe Morgan batted in two runs with a triple in the seventh to ice Dierker's decision.

Mets 6, Phillies 0 at New York (day game):
Tom Seaver pitched the first complete game to the credit of the Mets' staff this season and Bud Harrelson hit the club's first homer of the year to mark a 6-0 victory over the Phillies. Harrelson's clout off Grant Jackson in the first inning also was the first over-the-fence homer of the infielder's major league career. His only other round-tripper came on an inside-the-park drive August 17, 1967, in Pittsburgh. Harrelson added a triple and single to his hit collection in support of Seaver, who won his second game of the year and 12th straight in regular-season play since last August 9.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dick Allen hit his fourth homer in eight games with the Cardinals to feature a 5-2 victory over the Pirates. Joe Torre batted in two runs with a single in the first inning. After Allen hit his homer in the third, the Cardinals iced the decision with two more runs on a single by Torre, an error, and singles by Joe Hague and Julian Javier. Bob Robertson collected four of the Pirates' seven hits off George Culver.
