Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 4, Yankees 3 (day game) / Yankees 8, Orioles 5 at Baltimore (day game):
After collecting only four hits off Mike Cuellar in a 4-3 loss, the Yankees broke loose for 17 hits and defeated the Orioles in the second game of a doubleheader, 8-5. Davey Johnson batted in the first three runs for the Orioles in the opener with a single and homer. What proved to be the deciding marker counted in the seventh on a single by Merv Rettenmund, a stolen base and a double by Frank Robinson. The Yankees went ahead to stay in the nightcap when Roy White and Curt Blefary singled, Pete Ward tripled and Jake Gibbs hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Horace Clarke gathered five of the Yankees' hits. Andy Etchebarren and Chico Salmon smashed homers for the Orioles.

Royals 4, Angels 1 at California (day game):
The Royals pushed across three runs in the 13th inning, with a freak play accounting for only one run on a double with the bases loaded, to defeat the Angels, 4-1. Ellie Rodriguez walked, Jim Rooker was hit by a pitch and George Spriggs beat out a bunt to open the stanza. After Rodriguez scored the tie-breaking run on a passed ball, Ed Kirkpatrick drew a pass to reload the sacks. Amos Otis then doubled to right-center field, scoring Rooker, but Spriggs, who had held up, was thrown out at the plate and Kirkpatrick was doubled up after rounding third base.

Twins 6, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The Twins' acquisition of Brant Alyea in their deal with the Senators continued to pay slugging dividends when the outfielder drove in four runs with a homer and double to lead the way in a 6-3 victory over the Athletics. In seven games in which he had played so far, Alyea had 16 RBIs. Reggie Jackson homered with a man on base for the A's. Jim Perry, who started for the Twins, gained his third straight victory with the aid of Ron Perranoski, who took over in the eighth inning.

Dodgers 10, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
With Ted Sizemore, Willie Davis and Wes Parker driving in two runs apiece, the Dodgers defeated the Braves, 10-1, behind the six-hit pitching of Alan Foster. Parker accounted for his RBIs with a homer in the third inning.

Reds 6, Giants 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Wayne Simpson, the Reds' 21-year-old rookie righthander, yielded only one hit in posting a 6-0 victory over the Giants. Ken Henderson doubled in the first inning off Simpson, who walked seven and hit one batter while winning his third straight game. Tony Perez led the Reds at bat with three hits, including a homer with a man on base and two run-producing singles.

Astros 5, Padres 1 at Houston (day game):
The Astros got one-hit pitching from Tom Griffin and defeated the Padres, 5-1. A tremendous catch by Jim Wynn deprived Cito Gaston of a hit in the fourth inning, but on his next trip in the seventh, Gaston lined a double to right-center field for the Padres' lone safety. Griffin gave up a run in the first wthout a hit when Jose Arcia walked, stole second and scored on a pair of infield outs. The Astros tied the score with singles by Tommy Davis, Wynn and Denis Menke in their half and went ahead with two runs in the second on a pass to Doug Rader, forceout by Johnny Edwards, triple by Joe Morgan and single by Davis. John Mayberry stole home in the eighth and the Astros added other run in that same stanza on a pass with the bases loaded.

[DH] Phillies 3, Mets 2 (day game) / Mets 10, Phillies 2 at New York (day game):
Snapping a seven-game losing streak, the Phillies defeated the Mets, 3-2, in the 10-inning opener of a doubleheader, but the defending champions came back to win the nightcap, 10-2. The Phillies had gone scoreless against the Mets' pitching for 53 consecutive innings dating back to last September 7 before breaking the drouth in the lidlfter when Byron Browne doubled and crossed the plate on singles by Terry Harmon and Mike Ryan in the fifth. With the score tied at 1-1 in the 10th, Tony Taylor singled, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Larry Hisle. One out later, Browne walked and Johnny Briggs singled to drive in what proved to be the deciding run, enabling the Phillies to withstand a homer by Joe Foy in the Mets' half. The Mets won the nightcap with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, four runs scored on a walk, hit batsman, another walk and a wild pitch. Don nClendenon hit a homer with two men on base in the fifth. Don Money batted in the Phillies' tallies with a single and a homer.
