Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 3, Brewers 1 at California (night game):
The relief pitching of Ken Tatum, who struck out two straight batters with two men on base and one out in the ninth inning, saved the Angels' 3-1 victory over the Brewers. Tom Murphy, who yielded only three hits, was lifted after walking the first man in the ninth. Denny Doyle walked another with one out before Tatum took over. The Angels scored all their runs in the third inning on a single by Murphy, pass to Sandy Alomar, forceout of Alomar by Jim Fregosi, singles by Bill Voss and Alex Johnson and a double by Jay Johnstone.

Tigers 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Getting his the first two major league hits, Elliott Maddox drove in one run and scored another as the Tigers defeated the Indians, 5-3, for their the sixth straight victory. Homers by Vada Pinson and Eddie Leon, Pinson's blow coming with a man on base, gave the Indians a 3-0 lead, but the Tigers pulled even in the fourth, with a single by Maddox producing the tying tally. In the ninth, Maddox beat out an infield hit and scored the tie-breaking run on a double by Cesar Gutierrez. Al Kaline followed with a single to plate an insurance marker.

Twins 4, White Sox 3 at Minnesota (day game):
After Harmon Killebrew homered with two men on base in the sixth inning, the Twins added an unearned run on an error by Luis Aparicio and a triple by Cesar Tovar in the seventh to edge the White Sox, 4-3. The two tainted tallies enabled the White Sox to take a 2-0 lead before Tovar singled, Rod Carew doubled and Killebrew connected for his homer.

A's 4, Royals 3 at Oakland (night game):
Homers by Reggie Jackson and Don Mincher, each with a man on base, lifted the Athletics to a 4-3 victory over the Royals. Mincher's round-tripper in the eighth inning made amends for a throwing error by the first baseman that allowed the Royals to take a 3-2 lead in the top half of the eighth.

Senators 7, Yankees 5 at Washington (night game):
Bernie Allen drove in four runs and Ken McMullen batted in three to account for all of the Senators' scoring in a 7-5 victory over the Yankees. Lee Maye crossed the plate four times after reaching base on two doubles and two singles. Allen hit a homer in the fifth inning after Maye doubled and Ken McMullen was safe on an error.

Reds 13, Braves 8 at Atlanta (night game):
The red-hot Reds smashed seven homers, two by Bernie Carbo and one each by Jonnny Bench, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion, Bobby Tolan and Pete Rose, to defeat the Braves, 13-8. Rico Carty, Orlando Cepeda and Felic Millan homered for the Braves. The two-club total of 10 tied the N. L. record for most homers in a night game. The mark was set by these same two clubs on August 10, 1956, in a game at Cincinnati.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 4 at Chicago (day game):
The first homers off Cardinals' pitching in 10 games this season doomed Bob Gibson to defeat when the Cubs rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to gain a 7-4 victory. With two out, Don Kessinger walked, Glenn Beckert singled and Billy Williams hit for the circuit. Ron Santo then singled and Johnny Callison followed with another homer.

Padres 5, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Breaking away in the ninth inning, the Padres scored two runs on a pass to Van Kelly, double by Cito Gaston and single by Ivan Murrell to defeat the Mets, 5-3. Nate Colbert hit his sixth homer of season for the Padres in the fourth.

Pirates 9, Astros 8 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead and then staved off the Astros to gain a 9-8 victory. Jim Wynn batted in five runs for the Astros, three with a double in the third and two with a homer in the seventh. The Pirates' big inning began with a double by Manny Sanguillen and infield hit by Gene Alley. Bill Mazeroski doubled for one run and Matty Alou followed with a single to plate two tallies. After Richie Hebner forced Alou, Roberto Clemente homered for what proved to be the winning blow.
