Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 4, White Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Tony Horton doubled with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie and lead the Indians to a 4-1 victory over the White Sox. Jack Heidemann and Ted Uhlaender singled and Graig Nettles walked to load the sacks for Horton's two-run double. Nettles also scored on a wild pitch. Uhlaender added the Indians' final run with a homer in the eighth.

Orioles 7, Royals 5 at Kansas City (day game):
In a battle of seven homers, the Orioles defeated the Royals, 7-5. Mike Cuellar, Frank Robinson and Boog Powell connected for the Orioles, while the Royals had two homers by Bob Oliver and one apiece by Jackie Hernandez and Amos Otis. Robinson started the scoring with a two-run double in the first inning. Cuellar hit his round-tripper with a man on base in the second to send the Orioles ahead, 4-1. However, the Royals began their bombardment and consecutive homers by Otis and Oliver in the sixth put them ahead, 5-4. The Orioles responded with back-to-back blows by Robinson and Powell in the seventh and added their final run on a single by Robinson and double by Powell in the ninth.

Tigers 8, Twins 6 at Minnesota (day game):
Three unearned runs that resulted from a wild throw by Cesar Tovar with the bases loaded in the third inning proved the difference when the Tigers defeated the Twins, 8-6. Tovar's error came on an apparent double-play ball hit by Jim Northrup and cleared the bases. Northrup then scored himself on a single by Bill Freehan. Dick McAuliffe led off the game with a homer in the first when the Tigers counted twice. Brant Alyea batted in four runs for the Twins with a pair of doubles. After a walk and a triple by Tovar in the fourth, the Twins tied the score with a homer by Harmon Killebrew in the fifth. The Tigers broke away in the seventh when Northrup walked and Freehan hit for the circut.

Senators 5, Angels 3 at Washington (night game):
A tremendous homer by Frank Howard, who smashed the ball an estimated 510 feet, broke a 3-3 tie in the third inning and sent the Senators on the way to a 5-3 victory over the Angels. Lee Maye also homered for the Nats, connecting with two men on base in the first, but the Angels got two runs back on a bases-loaded single by Jim Fregosi in the second and pulled even when Roger Repoz hit for the circuit in the third. Howard was thrown out of the game in the fifth for arguing a called third strike, marking only his second banishment in 775 A. L. contests.

Cubs 6, Astros 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-3 victory over the Astros behind the five-hit pitching of Ken Holtzman. The lefthander helped himself with a two-run double in the sixth inning when the Cubs scored four times to take a 4-2 lead. The Cubs then clinched their victory when Ron Santo singled and Johnny Callison homered for his third hit of the game.

Dodgers 1, Mets 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Breaking up a 15-inning game, Tom Haller singled to score Wes Parker and give the Dodgers a 1-0 victory over the Mets. Parker led off with a single and advanced on a groundout by Manny Mota. After an intentional pass to Bill Buckner, Haller came through with his single to end the four-hour, five-minute contest.

Braves 9, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
With Jim Nash pitching a five-hitter, the Braves snapped their six-game losing streak by defeating the Pirates, 9-0. Rico Carty, hitting safely in his 15th straight game, started the Braves' scoring by driving in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the third inning. Tony Gonzalez homered in the fourth and also hit RBI singles in the eighth and ninth as the Braves scored three runs in each stanza.

Phillies 5, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
Deron Johnson homered and drove in another run with a single to help the Phillies defeat the Padres, 5-4. A homer by Cito Gaston with a man on base paced the Padres to a 3-2 lead, but Johnson tied the score with his round-tripper in the fifth inning. Then in the seventh, a walk to Don Money, single by Johnny Briggs, error by Jerry Morales on a hit to left field and single by Johnson added two runs to the Phillies' total. The Padres fell short with a marker in the eighth on a triple by Morales and single by Gaston.

Giants 12, Expos 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Gaylord Perry, the only Giants' starter with a victory to his credit so far this season, brought his record to 2-2 when his teammates bombed the Expos, 12-3. Perry also was the only 'Frisco flinger with a complete game, traveling the route for the second time. Dick Dietz provided the principal support for Perry, driving in five runs with four hits, including a homer with two men on base. Ron Hunt also hit a three-run homer.

Cardinals 3, Reds 1 at St. Louis (night game):
George Culver, facing his former teammates for the first time, pitched the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Reds, whose defense failed rookie Wayne Simpson. Tony Perez, who accounted for the Reds' run with a homer in the eighth inning, set an N. L. record for most round-trippers in the month of April, with 9. Simpson yielded only three hits, including a homer by Lou Brock in the first inning. Culver singled in the eighth and Jose Cardenal was safe on an error by Perez. With two out, Joe Torre hit a pop fly into short center field and when Dave Concepcion dropped the ball, both Culver and Cardenal scored.
