Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 5, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
Gene Brabender allowed only three hits and, with last-out help from Bob Locker, pitched the Brewers to a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. Jerry Moses chased Brabender by hitting a two-run homer. Max Alvis batted in two runs for the Brewers with a single in the eighth inning. Jerry McNertney also accounted for two RBIs, one with a sacrifice fly and other by drawing a pass with the bases loaded.

White Sox 2, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Joe Horlen and Wilbur Wood combined on a four-hitter and pitched the White Sox to a 2-0 victory over the Indians. Horlen, who hurt his back in pre-game practice, left the mound after seven innings. The White Sox scored their first run on singles by Gail Hopkins, Duane Josephson and Horlen in the second. A safe bunt by Luis Aparicio, double by Carlos May and sacrifice fly by Buddy Bradford added the other run in the third.

Orioles 10, Royals 9 at Kansas City (day game):
Although forced to call on six pitchers, the Orioles were able to beat the Royals, 10-9, marking their 14th straight victory over the expansion club since losing their initial meeting, 4-2, on May 9, 1969. Brooks Robinson batted in four runs with a pair of doubles and Davey Johnson homered with a man on base to pace the Orioles to a 7-4 lead after four and one-half innings. Ed Kirkpatrick homered for the Royals in the fifth, Bob Oliver followed with a three-run blast in the sixth and Pat Kelly singled to drive in another Kaycee run in the seventh. However, in the eighth, Clay Dalrymple walked, Terry Crowley singled and Don Buford won the game for the Orioles by hitting a homer.

Twins 6, Tigers 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Luis Tiant not only pitched a three-hitter, but collected three hits himself, to feature the Twins' 6-0 victory over the Tigers. Mickey Lolich, who had pitched five straight complete games, was kayoed in the sixth when the Twins scored four runs. The outburst started with a two-out single by Frank Quilici. Tiant doubled, scoring Quilici, and then stole third, catching the Tigers by surprise. Cesar Tovar followed with a single and Leo Cardenas tripled to chase Lolich. Harmon Killebrew added a single off reliever Jerry Robertson for the fourth run of the frame.

Yankees 8, A's 3 at New York (day game):
Jerry Kenney homered in the fifth inning and then hit a two-run single in the sixth when the Yankees scored four times en route to an 8-3 victory over the Athletics. Curt Blefary and Danny Cater singled to open the sixth and Blue Moon Odom was lifted after fumbling a bunt by Thurman Munson. Gene Michael singled off Jim Roland to drive in one run and Ron Woods walked to force in another, sending the Yankees ahead, 4-3. After Horace Clarke flied out, Kenney singled, scoring Munson and Michael. Bobby Murcer homered with a man on base to wrap up the Yankees' scoring in the eighth. Don Mincher had a homer for the Athletics.

Angels 3, Senators 2 at Washington (day game):
After going hitless in 20 trips, Sandy Alomar snapped out of his slump with a single and a resounding double to lead the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the Senators. Aurelio Rodriguez also collected two hits for the Angels and scored what proved to be the winning run on a double by Alomar in the eighth inning. Mike Epstein homered with a man on base in the Senators' half of the eighth. After the game, the Angels announced the trade of Rodriguez and Rick Reichardt to the Senators for Ken McMullen.

Cubs 6, Astros 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs extended their winning streak to 10 games, beating the Astros, 6-3, with a three-homer barrage that included a grand slam by Ron Santo. Billy Williams started the Cubs' scoring with a round-tripper in the fourth inning. The Cubs loaded the bases in the sixth on a single by Don Kessinger, an error and a walk to Williams, setting the stage for Santo's smash off Larry Dierker. After two out, Jim Hickman added a homer for the Cubs' final marker. The Astros' runs also scored on a homer, Johnny Edwards connecting for the circuit with two men on base in the seventh.

Mets 3, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Tom Seaver, who struck out 19, including the last 10 batters in a row, in his previous start against the Padres, was unable to continue his mastery, fanning only six, but the ace righthander pitched the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers. The Mets ended a string of 30 scoreless innings when Donn Clendenon homered in the second. The Dodgers picked up their run in the fourth on doubles by Willie Davis and Andy Kosco. Mike Jorgensen hit his first major league homer in the sixth to break the tie and pin the defeat on Sandy Vance, who made his debut with the Dodgers. Bud Harrelson followed with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an infield out and then stole home.

Braves 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Loser of four straight decisions, Phil Niekro bounced back with a two-hitter and pitched the Braves to a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. Tommie Aaron stole the limelight from his famous brother, Hank, and batted in both runs with a double and homer.

Phillies 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Two pinch-hitters, Rick Joseph and Tony Taylor, came through for the Phillies in an eighth-inning rally that beat the Padres, 3-2. With the Padres leading, 2-1, Byron Browne singled with one out. Joseph batted for Larry Bowa and tripled to tie the score. Then with two away, Taylor went to the plate for Denny Doyle and singled to drive in the winning run.

[DH] Giants 11, Expos 1 (day game) / Expos 3, Giants 2 at San Francisco (day game):
The Expos bounced back after absorbing an 11-1 pounding in the first game of a doubleheader and beat the Giants in the second game, 3-2. In the first inning of the lidlifter, Willie McCovey hit a grand-slam homer off Bill Stoneman after the Giants had loaded the bases on walks to Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays around a single by Ron Hunt. McCovey also hit a bases-empty homer in the fifth and Bonds rapped one in the sixth before Dick Dietz wound up the Giants' bombardment with a grand slam in the eighth. A single by Bonds and passes to Hunt and McCovey set the stage for Dietz' smash off Carroll Sembera. Mike McCormick breezed to victory with a three-hitter. Carl Morton, who started his career in the minors as an outfielder, made his first major league start in the nightcap and was the Expos' winner. Mack Jones backed the rookie with a triple and double. Ken Henderson drove in the Giants' runs with a homer in the sixth inning.

Cardinals 4, Reds 1 at St. Louis (day game):
