Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, A's 3 at Boston (day game):
A homer by Reggie Smith for his the third hit of game broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and lifted the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Athletics. Smith tripled and scored in the first and singled to set up another run in the third. Back-to-back doubles by Rico Petrocelli and George Scott added a marker for the Red Sox in the seventh. The A's runs scored on homers by Frank Fernandez, Don Mincher and Rick Monday.

Indians 5, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
In addition to pitching a six-hitter, Sam McDowell singled twice and scored two runs to lead the Indians to a 5-1 victory over the Twins. Vada Pinson drove in three runs with two sacrifice flies and a single. The Twins' only tally off McDowell counted on a triple by Tony Oliva and single by Brant Alyea.

Senators 6, Brewers 5 at Washington (night game):
Coming back after the Brewers took a 5-3 lead, the Senators rallied for three runs in the 10th inning to gain a 6-5 victory. John Kennedy walked for the Brewers in the 10th and scored on a double by Ted Savage. After a walk to Steve Hovley, a double steal and an intentional pass to Mike Hegan, Savage crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the Senators' half, passes to Rick Reichardt and Jim French, around a single by John Roseboro, loaded the bases. Ed Brinkman singled, driving in two runs. John O'Donoghue replaced Bob Locker and threw wildly on a bunt by Ed Stroud, allowing the winning run to score.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rick Wise hit two singles, scored one run and drove in another to help himself to victory as the Phillies edged the Dodgers, 4-3. Singles by Wise, Denny Doyle, Don Money and Johnny Briggs produced the first two tallies for the Phillies in the third inning. Larry Hisle singled in the fourth, stopped at third on a double by Byron Browne and scored on a sacrifice fly by Larry Bowa. Wise then singled to plate Browne with what proved to be the winning run. The Dodgers chipped away at Wise and cut their deficit to one run, but Joe Hoerner relieved and allowed only one hit in the last 2 2/3 innings.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Cubs posted their 11th straight victory -- the club's longest winning streak since 1945 -- taking advantage of an unearned run to beat the Pirates, 1-0. With two out in the third inning, Glenn Beckert tripled and scored when the relay from the outfield bounced off catcher Manny Sanguillen's glove. Joe Decker, who started for the Cubs, ran into serious trouble when Roberto Clemente tripled with one away in the ninth. Hank Aguirre relieved and passed Bob Robertson. Al Oliver then tapped to Aguirre, who caught Clemente off third base. Phil Regan replaced Aguirre to face Jerry May, who ended the game by grounding into a forceout at third.
