Homers by Tony Conigliaro and Mike Andrews provided the Red Sox with a 2-1 victory over the Athletics. Bill Lee held the A's to one hit until they broke through with their run in the eighth inning on two-out singles by Frank Fernandez, Roberto Pena and Bert Campaneris. Ray Jarvis finished the inning and Sparky Lyle set down the A's in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Orioles 4, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Boog Powell, who hit a homer and double, drove in all of the Orioles' runs in a 4-2 victory over the White Sox. Mark Belanger and Frank Robinson were on base with singles when Powell pounded his homer in the first inning. Robinson singled, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on Powell's double in the fifth. Bill Melton homered to account for one White Sox run off Mike Cuellar.

Tigers 8, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Hitting his the first homer of the season, Al Kaline helped send the Tigers on their way to an 8-3 victory over the Royals. Joe Niekro and Dick McAuliffe doubled and Mickey Stanley singled for two runs in the third inning before Kaline added two more with his circuit clout. The Royals scored their runs in the sixth when Jim Rooker was safe on an error and Lou Piniella and Paul Schaal homered on consecutive pitches.

Indians 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Getting life when Harmon Killebrew dropped a pop foul, the Indians scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Twins, 3-1. After Killebrew's muff with one out, Ted Uhlaender returned to the plate and singled. Graig Nettles forced Uhlaender, but Vada Pinson singled and Tony Horton then doubled, driving in both runners.

Yankees 7, Angels 5 at New York (night game):
Fritz Peterson drove in two runs with a single in the fifth inning and hit the first homer of his major league career in the seventh to help himself to the Yankees' 7-5 victory over the Angels. Ron Woods also homered for the Yankees. Peterson faltered in the ninth when Ken McMullen came up with a man on base and hit his first homer in an Angels' uniform. With two out, Jim Spencer was safe on an error and Joe Azcue doubled. Steve Hamilton relieved and gave up a run-scoring hit by Billy Cowan before retiring Ray Oyler.

Ted Savage and Danny Walton rapped round-trippers for the Brewers. Reds 4, Astros 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tony Perez tied a major league record for most homers in April, hitting his 10th of the month, to lead the Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Astros. Dick Selma was the winner in relief, but the righthander figured in an unusual bit of strategy by Manager Frank Lucchesi in the Dodgers' half of the 10th. When the Dodgers put two men on base with walks with two out, Selma went to third base, replacing Tony Taylor, and lefthander Joe Hoerner came to the mound to face Willie Davis, who popped up to end the game. The score was tied, 1-1, until the eighth when Billy Grabarkewitz homered to put the Dodgers ahead, but Larry Hisle saved the Phillies from defeat by hitting for the circuit with two out in the ninth.

The Cubs' 11-game winning streak came to an end with a 6-1 loss to the Pirates. Manny Sanguillen hit two homers for the Pirates and drove in three runs. The Expos went on to add two more runs before the inning ended on a single by Bobby Wine with the bases loaded. In the nightcap, the Expos piled up 13 hits, including a triple and double by Wine, in addition to Fairly's second homer of the night.
