Red Sox 5, A's 3 at Boston (night game):
Three players and a coach were banished for fighting in a brushback battle that saw the Red Sox defeat the Athletics, 5-3. The brawl broke out when Sonny Siebert, the Red Sox starter, hit Reggie Jackson with a pitch in the sixth inning. Jackson and Blue Moon Odom of the A's and Siebert and coach George Thomas of the Red Sox were banished. The Red Sox scored twice in the first on three singles and a wild pitch. Siebert was hit by a pitch in the fifth when the Red Sox went on to kayo Chuck Dobson with a single by Mike Andrews, double by Luis Alvarado and single by Tony Conigliaro. After Siebert was ejected in the next stanza, the Red Sox had to call on four relief pitchers to emerge with their victory. Tito Francona homered for the A's first run in the seventh inning.

Orioles 18, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
The first major league batter to hit three homers in a game this season, Paul Blair accomplished feat in the Orioles' 18-2 romp over the White Sox. Blair smashed his first homer with two men on base in the third inning, connected again with one aboard in the fourth and finished his slugging with a solo swat in the ninth. Elrod Hendricks and Boog Powell also homered for the Orioles, each with two men on base.

Tigers 8, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Elliott Maddox hit the first homer of his major league career, connecting with a man on base in the ninth inning, to sew up the Tigers' 8-2 victory over the Royals. Willie Horton also homered for the Tigers and drove in another run with a triple.

Twins 1, Indians 0 at Minnesota (day game):
A perfect throw to the plate by Tony Oliva in the fifth inning proved to be the big play as the Twins nipped the Indians, 1-0. Ray Fosse singled, stopped at second on a hit by Eddie Leon and then tried to score a on single by Jack Heidemann, but was nailed on Oliva's peg from right field. Oliva scored the Twins' run in the third after forcing Leo Cardenas, who had singled. Oliva took second on a single by Harmon Killebrew and crossed the plate when Graig Nettles muffed a grounder by Rich Reese. Tony Horton doubled and Roy Foster walked for the Indians in the ninth, but Stan Williams replaced Jim Kaat and saved the game by picking Horton off second.

Angels 3, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
A single by Ken McMullen in the eighth inning drove in what proved to be the Angels' winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Yankees. McMullen walked in the second frame and scored the Angels' initial run on a single by Tom Egan and sacrifice fly by Roger Repoz. Singles by Jarvis Tatum and Jim Fregosi, together with a forceout by Alex Johnson, added a run in the sixth. Sandy Alomar walked in the eighth and crossed the plate on singles by Bill Voss and McMullen.

Senators 4, Brewers 0 at Washington (night game):
Frank Howard and Aurelio Rodriguez homered for the second night in succession as the Senators defeated the Brewers, 4-0, behind the pitching of Dick Bosman. Ed Stroud, who also had homered in the previous night's game, tripled in the third inning and scored on a single by Lee Maye. Rodriguez added a run with his round-tripper in the fourth and Howard wound up scoring with his drive with Stroud on base in the fifth.

Reds 5, Astros 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
With help from Clay Carroll in the eighth inning, Jim Merritt gained his fifth victory in six decisions this season when the Reds defeated the Astros, 5-3. The Astros, who went down to their eighth straight loss, collected six doubles among their eight hits off Merritt. Carroll yielded two hits, including a homer by Joe Pepitone in the ninth. The Reds broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth when Bernie Carbo drew a pass from Tom Griffin with the bases loaded. In the seventh, Bobby Tolan doubled, Tony Perez was passed intentionally and Johnny Bench followed with a game-winning double, driving in both runners.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Held to five hits by Claude Osteen, the Phillies lost to the Dodgers, 6-1, to end their six-game winning streak. The Dodgers bunched singles by Ted Sizemore, Billy Grabarkewitz and Maury Wills with an error for two runs in the third inning. Grant Jackson, who started for the Phillies, was kayoed in the fifth when the Dodgers added three runs on a single by Manny Mota, a homer by Andy Kosco, double by Wes Parker and throwing error by Tony Taylor.

Cubs 10, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Billy Williams batted in three runs with a homer and single to lead the Cubs' attack in a 10-5 victory over the Pirates. Willie Smith also homered and Ron Santo contributed a triple and double. The Cubs gained their winning margin with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning. Smith and J.C. Martin singled and Bill Hands and Don Kessinger walked to force in the first run. Glenn Beckert added two runs with a single and two more followed on singles by Williams and Johnny Callison.

Padres 10, Expos 0 at San Diego (night game):
pat Dobson ended the Padres' six-game losing streak by pitching a three-hitter to defeat the Expos, 10-0. Dobson, who struck out 11, turned in the first complete game to the credit of the San Diego staff this season. The Padres' attack included homers by Ollie Brown and Al Ferrara.

Giants 8, Mets 6 at San Francisco (day game):
Al Gallagher, who had gone hitless in his 26 previous times at bat, came through with a pinch single in the eighth inning when the Giants scored three runs to defeat the Mets, 8-6. With the Mets leading, 6-5, Ken Henderson bunted safely in the eighth and with two out Bob Burda walked. Gallagher then hit his single, scoring Henderson with the tying run. After a walk to Bobby Bonds filled the bases, Ron Hunt sent the Giants ahead with a single and when Willie Mays was hit by a pitch, the final run was forced across the plate.

Braves 10, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
In a crushing comeback, the Braves scored four runs in the eighth inning and then exploded for five more in the ninth to defeat the Cardinals, 10-6. Homers by Dick Allen and Joe Hague paced the Cardinals to a 6-1 lead before the Braves went to work in the eighth with a double by Sonny Jackson, singles by Tony Gonzalez and Hank Aaron, a double by Orlando Cepeda and single by Felix Millan. In the ninth, a walk, a single by Aaron and double by Rico Carty tied the score with one away. After a pass to Cepeda, Allen booted a potential double-play grounder off the bat of Millan, Aaron scoring. Carty counted on a wild pitch and Bob Priddy then wrapped up the victory with a two-run single.
