Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, A's 7 at Boston (day game):
Rico Petrocelli, George Scott and Billy Conigliaro collected eight hits among them, with each having a homer, and drove in total of seven runs as the Red Sox defeated the Athletics, 8-7. Petrocelli hit a single, double and two-run homer, Scott also had a two-run homer, plus a pair of doubles, and Billy Conigliaro, subbing for his ailing brother Tony, drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly, single and homer. The A's attack included circuit clouts by Felipe Alou, Joe Rudi and Frank Fernandez.

White Sox 6, Orioles 3 at Chicago (day game):
Tommy John, who had lost five straight decisions, received credit for his first victory of the season when four unearned runs enabled the White Sox to defeat the Orioles, 6-3. A wild throw by Andy Etchebarren, after fielding a tap by Carlos May, opened the doors for the White Sox in the sixth inning. May reached third on the error and scored on a single by Bill Melton. Two walks then loaded the bases and the White Sox added three runs on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Knoop and singles by John and Tommy McCraw.

Royals 3, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
After drawing a walk with two out in the 10th inning, Amos Otis raced home on a double by Bob Oliver to give the Royals a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. Triples by Cesar Gutierrez and Al Kaline figured in the Tigers' tallies, while the Royals scored their first two runs on homers by Amos Otis and Joe Keough.

Twins 4, Indians 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Homers by Harmon Killebrew, Brant Alyea and Leo Cardenas produced all of the Twins' runs in 4-1 victory over the Indians. Killebrew clouted his homer in the fourth inning and after a single by Rich Reese, Alyea also hit for the circuit. Cardenas added his round-tripper in the fifth. The Indians' run also came on a homer, Graig Nettles rapping his the first of the season.

Yankees 1, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
Pitching the first complete game to the credit of the Yankees' staff this season, Stan Bahnsen defeated the Angels, 1-0. Bahnsen's duel with Rudy May was decided in the third inning when Horace Clarke walked, took the third on a single by Bobby Murcer and scored on a sacrifice fly by Roy White.

Senators 12, Brewers 2 at Washington (night game):
Frank Howard and Bernie Allen each homered with two men on base as the Senators exploded for seven runs in the third inning to start a 12-2 victory over the Brewers. Howard's homer, his third in as many games, came after Ed Brinkman was hit by a pitch and Ed Stroud singled. Mike Epstein and Aurelio Rodriguez singled ahead of Allen's drive. A single by George Brunet, double by Brinkman and single by Stroud added the seventh run of the stanza. Howard made it a five-RBI night by batting in other runs with singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

Braves 9, Cubs 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Hitting safely in his 20th straight game, Rico Carty smashed two homers, including the first grand-slam of his major league career, to lead the Braves to a 9-2 victory over the Cubs. Carty connected with the bases loaded off Fergie Jenkins in the first inning and added a solo drive as the leadoff batter in the fifth. Hal King and Hank Aaron also homered for the Braves, while Jim Hickman hit one for the Cubs. Billy Williams played in his 1,000th consecutive game in a Cubs' uniform.

Dodgers 2, Expos 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Handed a two-run lead in the first inning, Sany Vance posted his first major league victory, pitching the Dodgers past the Expos, 2-1. The Dodgers started off by loading the bases on a safe bunt by Maury Wills, single by Ted Sizemore and a pass. Wes Parker then drew a walk from Bill Stoneman to force in the first run and the second scored when Willie Crawford forced Parker. In the third, Andy Kosco, the Dodgers' right fielder, ran into the foul pole trying for a fly by Bobby Wine, and was knocked unconscious. Wine circled bases and was credited with an inside-the-park homer. Kosco was forced to leave the game.

Mets 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Nolan Ryan set the Mets' club record for the most walks issued by a pitcher in a game, passing eight, but the fireballing righthander yielded only three hits and beat the Giants, 4-1. Mike McCormick, who was the Giants' loser, walked only two, but both passes came in the first inning around a single by Donn Clendenon to load the bases and Joe Foy followed with a single, driving in two runs. A triple by Bud Harrelson and single by Cleon Jones added a tally in the fifth and Tommie Agee homered for the Mets' final run in the seventh. The Giants' run counted in the third on a walk, a single by Hal Lanier, a sacrifice and an infield out by Bobby Bonds.
