Today's scores and summaries:
Braves 5, Pirates 3 at Atlanta (night game):
Rico Carty set an Atlanta club record, hitting safely in his 23rd straight game, and Jim Nash and Orlando Cepeda clouted homers as the Braves defeated the Pirates, 5-3, for their seventh victory in succession. Carty surpassed Felipe Alou's 22-game mark, set in 1968. While Carty kept his streak going, Sonny Jackson was stopped on a 16-game string.
Reds 7, Cardinals 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds extended their winning streak to six games by defeating the Cardinals, 7-3, behind the pitching of Gary Nolan, who registered his fifth straight victory. Nolan was lifted after Joe Hague singled in the ninth inning and Wayne Granger wrapped up the decision for his sixth save.
Astros 7, Cubs 2 at Houston (night game):
Posting the first complete-game victory of his N. L. career, Jim Bouton yielded only six hits and scored two runs as the Astros defeated the Cubs, 7-2. In the third inning, when the Astros broke a 1-1 tie, Bouton was hit by a pitch, Joe Morgan walked, Norm Miller singled and Jim Wynn lofted a sacrifice fly. Bouton singled in the eighth to start a four-run outburst by the Astros. Denis Menke capped the scoring with a two-run double.
