Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, Royals 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Clutch relief in the ninth by Pete Richert enabled Dave McNally to gain his fifth victory when the Orioles defeated the Royals, 3-1. McNally was lifted with one out after the Royals scored their run on singles by Paul Schaal and Bob Oliver and a double by Lou Piniella. With the tying runs on base, Richert struck out Mike Fiore and retired Luis Alcaraz on a grounder. Brooks Robinson, who collected four hits, scored two of the Orioles' runs.

Angels 4, Senators 2 at California (night game):
Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Billy Cowan drove in two runs with a single to bring the Angels a 4-2 victory over the Senators. Frank Howard and Rick Reichardt hit homers to produce the Senators' runs. The Angels picked up their first run in the seventh on a triple by Joe Azcue and infield out by Jay Johnstone. Jim Fregosi singled in the eighth and scored with one out on a double by Jim Spencer. The Senators passed Ken McMullen intentionally and got the second out when Jarvis Tatum forced Spencer at third, but Aurelio Rodriguez then booted a grounder by Azcue, loading the bases and setting the stage for Cowan's winning hit.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 at Chicago (night game):
Sam McDowell struck out 15 batters, but the Indians' southpaw lost to the White Sox, 2-1, because of his inability to stop Carlos May. The White Sox outfielder tripled and scored on a throwing error by McDowell in the seventh inning and then won the game by breaking the 1-1 tie with a homer in the ninth.

Tigers 5, Twins 2 at Detroit (night game):
Backed by five double plays, Les Cain turned in the first complete game of his major league carer and pitched the Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Twins. Kein Szotkiewicz marked the occasion by hitting his first major league homer for the Tigers. The Twins picked up their runs in the eighth inning when Leo Cardenas walked and Harmon Killebrew hit for the circuit.

Brewers 4, Red Sox 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
The new Brewers snapped their nine-game losing streak and were winners for the first time at home, after five defeats, when homers by John Kennedy and Ted Kubiak beat the Red Sox, 4-3. Kennedy's clout followed a walk to Greg Goossen and a single by Kubiak in the fourth inning. Billy Conigliaro homered for the Red Sox in the seventh and two runs to tie the score followed in the eighth when Reggie Smith singled and Carl Yastrzemski hit for the circuit. Kubiak smashed his homer in the Brewers' half to provide the winning run. Bobby Bolin, who gained the victory, struck out six straight batters at one stretch of his performance.

Yankees 7, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
Mel Stottlemyre received credit for the 100th victory of his A. L. career when the Yanks defeated the Athletics, 7-6. The Yankees, facing former teammate Al Downing for the first time, scored on a pass with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and then exploded for six runs in the fifth. Roy White batted in two runs with a double. Two runs also scored on a wild pitch by reliever Roberto Rodriguez. Don Mincher and Rick Monday hit two-run homers for the A's. Stottlemyre was lifted in the ninth, failing to last the route for the sixth straight time this season.

Braves 3, Pirates 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron homered with a man on base in the first inning to start the Braves off to a 3-0 victory over the Pirates behind the pitching of Phil Niekro. Aaron also singled in the sixth for the 2,988th hit of his career, moving him into ninth place on the all-time list ahead of Sam Rice. Aaron then stole second and scored on a double by Rico Carty.

Mets 5, Dodgers 4 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver registered his 16th consecutive victory over two seasons and sixth in row this year when the Mets defeated the Dodgers, 5-4. Seaver gave up a homer by Ted Sizemore in the third inning and was tagged for another by Willie Crawford with two aboard in the ninth. When next two the Dodgers reached base, Ron Taylor relieved Seaver and retired the side. Tommie Agee scored three runs for the Mets, twice crossing the plate on wild pitches.

Phillies 4, Padres 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
A wild pitch by Ron Herbel with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth inning handed the Phillies a 4-3 victory over the Padres. With one out in the eighth, Deron Johnson homered to tie the score at 3-3. Passes to Don Money and Larry Bowa, around a single by Larry Hisle, loaded the bases. After Del Bates popped up, Jim Hutto was at bat when Herbel uncorked his wild pitch, allowing Money to score the winning run.
